VALUE OF A STATISTICAL LIFE
A REVIEW OF EMPIRICAL LITERATURE FOR BRAZIL

This work synthesises the estimates found in the literature for the value of a statistical life in Brazil. The concept of the value of a statistical life and its theoretical foundation are presented, as well as the possibilities of estimating this parameter (revealed preference, contingent valuation, and transfer of benefits). The literature search was based on JEL keywords and classification codes, with identification, screening, eligibility and inclusion criteria documented in the work. Ten studies with VSL estimates were included, totalling 30 estimates. Monetary values were adjusted for inflation to January 2022 Brazilian Real. After identifying these estimates, meta-analysis techniques were used to synthesize them considering the subset of these works with information enough to do so (19 estimates). To assess the robustness of the meta-analysis result, benefits transfer exercises were performed based on the VVE defined by government agencies in other countries.
