Abstract

The main goal of this paper is to measure the degree of concentration of investment projects in the state of Espírito Santo. In doing so, we use a newly released survey, related to projects to be implanted during the 2008-2013 period. The results obtained show five distinct empirical patterns: i) most projects in the State are concentrated in the Energy and Infrastructure areas; ii) the distribution of project investments across sectors is highly assimetrical; iii) there is a high degree of spatial concentration of
projects in the Metropolitan area of the State; iv) there is a high degree of specialization of activities in most regions in the State, except for the Metropolitan area; v) results of a counterfactual exercise based
on the hypothesis of a homogeneous distribution of resources between regions demonstrate that the State should present a remarkably distinct spatial configuration in terms of investment projects. These results draw attention to the importance of the interiorization of development in the State as well as the need for a higher degree of diversification of local economic activities.
