Abstract

The study analyses the evolution of the technical efficiency in the agricultural sector of the regions of Rio Grande do Sul, between 1975 and 2006. The data used are from the agricultural census of 1975, 1995/96 and 2006 available from IBGE. The method used to estimate the regional technical
efficiency is the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). In a second step the statistical regression method Tobit was used to determine the explanatory variables of the technical efficiency of each period. From 1975 to 2006 the change in the structure of production could have been one of the factors
that permitted a region to remain efficient or augment its efficiency. The results show that the increase in the participation in the total value of agricultural sector product of the permanent crops, small and medium size animals and cultivated forestry contributed to the efficiency of the regions.
