Abstract

The transport literature has rarely considered the influence of spatial and social interaction on passenger flows. This work aims to estimate air travel demand using an extended gravity model, incorporating social network effects and controlling for fixed effects. The control for fixed effects in a presence of time-invariant explanatory variable was done using fixed effects
vector decomposition. The findings reveal that the indirect network effect is important to explain airline passenger flows. However there is no evidence on the statistical relevance of
direct network effect in the explanation of air travel flows.
