Abstract

Over the last two decades, in Brazil, the reduction in infant mortality associated with to waterborne diseases. Using an epidemiological framework model, our study demonstrates that this reduction was achieved with the improvement in the coverage of sanitation services and also due to access to education and health services. Based on the econometric results we estimate,
for each type of service, the average cost of saving a life. Considering these costs, the continued reduction of illiteracy guarantees the cheapest alternative to further lower the incidence of this type of mortality. On the other hand, defensive health expenditures have almost equivalent costs the respective costs related to the expansion of sanitation services, when it comes to same magnitude of reduction in this mortality rate.
