Abstract

The objective of this paper is to investigate the variables that affect reelection chances of the mayors in the state of Bahia, Brazil. The study investigated the municipal elections of 2000, 2004 and 2008. The methodological approach is based on a logistic unbalanced panel data regression model. The results show that voters’ behavior is to punish mayors that increase the total expenditures in an election year, and to reward governments that increase the total revenues in the election year. Another interesting result is that the mayor’s affiliation to the state governor’s political party increases their reelection chances.
