Abstract

This work seeks to analyze to what extent the Midwest has a competitive advantage in the production of poultry and swine, vis-à-vis the Southeast and South regions, due to better corn and soybean prices and, therefore, to the lower cost of feed. . For this, the work analyzes the price differentials of these grains between states in the period 1980/1995, and estimates the trade flows of corn, chicken and pork for the same period. The main conclusion is that, if the current spatial price structure is maintained, there is no significant reduction in the cost of production of slaughtered chicken between the Midwest and South regions due to the lower cost of feed; the same does not happen, however, between the Center-West and Southeast. Other factors related to the technological change that occurred in the poultry and swine sector, which may be favoring the competitiveness of the Midwest region, are also considered in this work.
