Abstract

This work uses the 2013 Pnad (National Household Survey) data with the application a Probit model in order to investigate the determinants of severe unemployment in Southern and Southeastern Brazil. The results show a lower chance of staying in severe unemployed for males, householders,
those who declared themselves black, those who are younger and those with higher education or in the process of getting such education. The probabilistic scenarios show that the individual with less chance to stay in unemployment for more than a year is male, is responsible for the household,
between 36 and 45 years of age and with higher level of education, with only a 0.8% chance. On the other hand, the individual which has a higher probability is female, between 46 and 65, illiterate and not the household provider, with a 25% probability.
