Abstract

The study analyzed the effects of school and urban violence on the Saeb score in mathematics of public school students in Rio Grande do Sul in 2017. For this purpose, school violence indexes (IV) and crime rates in Rio Grande do Sul cities were constructed (IC), through factor analysis. The results of these indices were then introduced as covariates in a school proficiency equation, estimated through a hierarchical model with four levels, students, classes, schools and municipalities. The results indicated that an increase of 1 percentage point (p.p.) in IV reduces the student’s Saeb score in Mathematics by 11 points and an increase of 1 p.p. the IC reduces this score by 8 points, highlighting the need for public actions to reduce urban and school violence, since these affect the process of human capital formation.
